In English

On Oct 29, PM Sanae Takaichi said the government will subsidize electricity and gas bills for December through February usage. Electricity gets ¥1/kWh off in December and ¥4.5/kWh in January and February, plus support for gas, which comes to about ¥7,000 over three months for a standard household. Last winter's aid started in January; this time it is brought forward to December, when the cold really sets in. Whether to extend it to March will be decided later. At the same time, the gasoline subsidy (now over ¥50 per liter, a record, costing over ¥10 billion a day) will shrink. The base price, now held at about ¥170 per liter for regular, will rise by about ¥5 a month from December toward spring. She would not say when the subsidy ends. Background: energy prices are high because of the Middle East situation, and 7 of the 10 big power companies are expected to post record-high rates for November usage (Kantei, Yomiuri, Sankei, Kyodo/Tokyo Shimbun). **Life tip:** You don't need to apply. Participating electricity and city-gas companies take the discount off your monthly bill automatically (check the 明細(めいさい), the bill breakdown, from the January bill for December usage). Propane (LP) gas isn't covered. If you drive, filling up before each monthly ¥5 step is a small but real saving.
