In English

At about 0:07 on Oct 29, a quake struck northeastern Chiba (JMA provisional M5.5, depth 52 km, updated from the preliminary M5.4). Yokoshibahikari in Chiba recorded shindo 5-lower, the strongest; shaking of shindo 4 to 1 was felt from Tohoku to the Izu Islands, including shindo 2 at Otemachi in central Tokyo. There's no tsunami risk. JMA says that in the hardest-hit areas people should watch for quakes of up to about shindo 5-lower for roughly a week, especially the next 2–3 days. Separately, Japan's new Disaster Management Agency (防災庁) launches Nov 2. On its first day, Minister Goshi Hosono plans an "emergency request" (緊急要請) asking the public to stock water, food and portable toilets for at least 3 days and ideally a week, and asking prefectures and ministries to strengthen their preparations (Nikkei, ANN, FNN, Oct 26–28). **Life tip:** Common guidelines are about 3 L of drinking and cooking water per person per day (21 L a week; 84 L for a family of four) and about 5 portable-toilet uses per adult per day (35 a week). In a 2025 Cabinet Office survey, 59.8% of respondents had 3+ days of food, but only 27.2% had portable or simple toilets (Yahoo! News expert article). Count what you have first, then top up the gaps (diapers and kids' food too).
