In English
Cases of generative AI being used to copy famous people's voices without permission keep piling up. Amid this, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has started considering whether to explicitly name "voice" and "likeness" as things protected under the Unfair Competition Prevention Act. Right now no law directly spells out a right to one's voice, and voice actors have been asking for legislation. At a council meeting on Oct 13, METI presented two options: add "likeness" and "voice" to the existing clause on business identifiers (which only protects things that are widely known), or create a new rule against unauthorized use, so less famous voice actors are covered too. No experts at the meeting clearly opposed either option.
